We often tell clients that selling is similar to dating. We've even mentioned it before in previous posts. A great example of selling is how you do on your resume and a job interview. Would you ever enter a bar or a chosen hangout, walk up to a girl, hand her a list of why you're a catch, then ask her to go out with you? Of course not!
Now think about trying to sell yourself. Don't say too much! Consider this, we have more than 3,000 messages in our mind per day - I have to pick up the kids, I have to do laundry, I have to go to the bathroom, etc. Knowing this, why would you apply for a job with a wordy, complex sounding and long resume that talks about "synergy" and "team work" and other lofty nonsense? Here's what we propose to people looking for a job. Make it simple, Don't Show Up and Throw Up! Write with an easy to read font, then below your name and contact info, have a "High Speed Summary" - these are 3 to 4 bullet points about your dramatic difference. Follow that up with just a touch of experience. If you had 10 seconds to catch my attention, what would you say to me? Give me enough to want to interview you! Think of the interview as the first date.
